Negaunee, MI – February 5th, 2019 – The Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team was back at home on a post-ice storm Tuesday night, as they hosted the Calumet Copper Kings! Jesse Anderson was in Negaunee to call all of the great action on Sunny 101.9FM!
1st Half:
The game started off to a slow start, neither team would score in the first two minutes of the quarter. Both teams started to pick it up quickly, as Negaunee went on a 6-0 run to take 6-4 lead. The Copper Kings would respond with a three-pointer, they led the Miners 7-6 with under three minutes remaining in the opening quarter. The action was back and forth, the teams were trading baskets. The Miners would end the quarter strong, and they led 12-9 after one quarter of play.
End of 1st: Negaunee Miners 12, Calumet Copper Kings 9
Calumet would strike first in the second quarter, as they cut the Miners’ lead to just one point. Both teams continued to trade baskets, and the Miners led 15-13 with four minutes to go in the half. The teams continued to battle, it was a great game thus far! Calumet led Negaunee 18-17 with under two minutes remaining in the second quarter. Both squads would score once again, as the game was tied at 20 with under 30 seconds remaining in the half. Calumet would score a late bucket to take a 22-20 lead going into the halftime locker room.
Halftime: Calumet Copper Kings 22, Negaunee Miners 20
2nd Half:
Calumet would open up the scoring in the third quarter, as the Copper Kings took a five point lead. Neither team could get a clear advantage, as the Miners trailed 29-25. Calumet and Negaunee were playing a great game in Lakeview Memorial Gymnasium. The Copper Kings extended their lead back up to seven points, they were trying to take the game from the Miners. Negaunee wasn’t going to give up easily, as they cut the lead right back to just five points. Negaunee would add a free throw before the end of quarter, and Calumet led 32-28 after three quarters of play.
End of 3rd: Calumet Copper Kings 32, Negaunee Miners 28
The Miners started the fourth quarter strong, as they scored six straight points to take a two point lead. Negaunee would nail another three-pointer, and took a five point lead. Calumet began to lose their composure in the fourth quarter, as the Miners began to hit their stride. Negaunee took a double digit lead with two minutes to go, but Calumet wasn’t giving up just yet. Negaunee’s 10 point lead quickly shrunk to three, Calumet was right back in it with 40 seconds left. The Miners led by four points with 10 seconds left, and they were fouled. Negaunee made things very interesting at the end of the game, but the Miners survived a tough Calumet team 46-40 on their home court.
Final Score: Negaunee Miners 46, Calumet Copper Kings 40
