Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball Defeats the Iron Mountain Mountaineers 46-32 on Sunny 101.9FM

Iron Mountain, MI – January 25th, 2019 – The Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team traveled to Iron Mountain on a bitter cold, Friday night to take on the Mountaineers. Jesse Anderson had the call on Sunny 101.9FM!

1st Half:

The game started off slow for both teams, but the Mountaineers would score first and take an early 2-0 lead. Iron Mountain was playing great defense to start, they had the Miners out of sorts on offense. Halfway through the quarter, Iron Mountain led Negaunee 4-2; both teams couldn’t find a rhythm offensively. Both squads would trade baskets, and with two minutes to go in the opening quarter, the Mountaineers led 6-4. Negaunee started to pick up the pace, as they took a 9-6 lead. Both teams were clicking offensively in the final minute of the quarter, and an Iron Mountain three-pointer at the buzzer tied the game at 11 after the first quarter of play.

The offense was picking up in this game, as Negaunee and Iron Mountain kept trading basket after basket. The Miners led 18-16 with six minutes to go in the first half, the action had definitely picked up. The Mountaineers would take the lead back, as they led the Miners 20-18. For the next couple minutes, the offense would slow down, as the game was scoreless. Negaunee would take a 23-20 lead after a layup, a great game was being played in Iron Mountain. Negaunee would score a basket late in the second quarter, and they took a 25-20 lead into the locker room.

2nd Half:

Negaunee would open up the second half scoring with a layup, but Iron Mountain would score five straight points to cut the lead back to only two points. The Miners would go on a big run of their own, taking a 34-25 lead with three minutes to go in the third quarter. The scoring would slow down late in the quarter, as the Miners kept their nine point lead going into the fourth quarter.

End of 3rd: Negaunee Miners 34, Iron Mountain Mountaineers 25

The Mountaineers would score the first four points of the quarter, Negaunee’s lead was only five now. The Miners responded nicely, and brought their lead back up to nine. The Mountaineers were making shots and staying the game, but the Miners were responding with a basket of their own. Negaunee would score once again, and take their biggest lead of the game with an 11 point advantage. Iron Mountain had to foul to have a chance, and the Miners did a good job at holding onto the lead late. Negaunee rode an impressive fourth quarter to a 46-32 road win over the Iron Mountain Mountaineers.
