Negaunee, Michigan – Thursday, October 18, 2018 – It was a rough season-ending night in Negaunee as the Negaunee Miners fell to the Westwood Patriots 44-0 in a battle for a spot in the playoffs. Mark Evans and Gregg Nelson were in Negaunee to bring all of the pre-playoff action to 101.9 SunnyFM.
The first quarter started with a kick from Negaunee’s Erik Salminen to Westwood. Not long after the kick, Westwood’s Ashton Bergman drove in a 66-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion was good, bringing the Patriots to an early 8-0 lead over the Miners. The Miners went on to move the ball well but were unable to answer back with a touchdown of their own. Westwood’s Taylor Dellangelo then went on to score a touchdown, with which the two-point conversion was good, bringing the first-quarter score to a 16-0 Patriots lead going into the second.
The football was in Westwood’s possession as the second quarter began. The Patriots showed no sign of slowing down, with Westwood’s Jacob Adriano scoring a touchdown on a 14-yard catch. The conversion was good, bringing Westwood to a 24-0 lead over Negaunee. The Miners gained some yardage as the quarter wound down, but were unable to make any magic happen. The score remained 24-0 with Westwood taking into halftime.

Negaunee took the second-half kick to begin the third quarter. The Miners were unable to score, turning the ball over on downs. After going back and forth with possession for a majority of the quarter, Westwood’s Nathan Beckman went on to score a 15-yard touchdown with three minutes left in the quarter. The conversion on this brought the score to 32-0. Negaunee tried to get on the board but were unable to as the quarter came to a close. The score remained at 32-0 with the Patriots in the lead going into the fourth.
Unfortunately, the game went into running-clock relatively early in the fourth quarter as Westwood’s Ashton Bergman scored his second touchdown of the night, bringing them to a 38-0 lead over the Miners. Then, with a little more than six minutes to go in the game, Westwood’s Troy Anderson scored another one, bringing the score to 44-0. The kick on this was missed, ending the game with a final Westwood lead of 44-0 over the Miners.
The Negaunee Miners ended their season with a 5-4 record. Great job, Miners!
