
Houghton, Michigan – Friday, October 12th, 2018 – It was a chilly night in the Keweenaw as the Negaunee Miners took down the Houghton Gremlins 36-16 in the second-to-last game of their regular season. Mark Evans and Gregg Nelson were there at the brand-new Alumni Field in Houghton to bring all of the action to 101.9 SunnyFM.
Negaunee won the coin toss but deferred and kicked to Houghton to start off the game. Not long after the Gremlins got the first down of the game, they turned the ball over to Negaunee’s Theo Kumpula. The Miners then went on to turn it back over to the Gremlins, eventually leading to a Gremlins touchdown by Xander Zapolnik along two-point conversion, bringing them to an 8-0 lead over the Miners. The Miners struggled for a little bit to get on the board, but they managed to score one of their own as Negaunee’s Eric Etelamaki drove home a 24-yard touchdown. The conversion was no good, bringing the score to 8-6 with Houghton in the lead as the first quarter came to a close.
The second quarter started with a Negaunee kick to Houghton. Houghton was moving the ball well, which eventually lead to another Houghton touchdown scored by Nathan Erva. The two-point try was good, bringing the Gremlins to a 16-6 lead. Negaunee’s quarterback Jason Waterman then answered with a touchdown of his own. The two-point try was good, bringing the score to 16-14. Then, just as the Gremlins gained possession of the ball, they turned it over to Negaunee. The Gremlins held their 16-14 lead going into halftime.
The ball belonged to the Miners as the third quarter began. Negaunee’s Jason Waterman then went on to score his second touchdown of the game. The two-point conversion was good, giving the Miners the upper hand as they took the lead 22-16. Shortly after gaining possession of the ball, the Gremlins fumbled and turned it back over to the Miners. This then led to a Negaunee first down with the ball on the 13-yard line. A hard hit on Waterman then took him out of the game, with Jake Larson taking his place on the field. Shortly after, Negaunee’s Peyton Anderson went on to score, bringing the Miners to a 30-16 lead as the third quarter ended. This quarter was the turning point for the Miners as they started to dominate the game.
The fourth quarter opened with Negaunee’s Peyton Anderson scoring his second touchdown of the night. This brought Negaunee to a 36-16 lead. Houghton tried hard to get back on the board, but were unable to, leading to a Miners win of 36-16!
