Negaunee Miners Football Falls Just Short of Victory Against Iron Mountain

Negaunee, MIAugust, 24 Negaunee Miners football came out swinging against the Iron Mountain Mountaineers with a 66 yard drive capped off by a Jason Waterman rushing touchdown. Iron Mountain blocked the extra point to keep the score at 6-0, and that’s where it stood at the end of the first quarter. There weren’t many opportunities for either team in the second quarter. During the final drive of the half Erik Salminen kicked a 20 yard field goal to put Negaunee up 9-0.

In the third quarter, the only turnover in the game went Negaunee’s way as Drew DuShane intercepted a Mountaineers pass. The Mountaineers came back and quarterback Marcus Johnson sent a 55 yard pass into the arms of Charlie Gerhard to put Iron Mountain on the board, 9-6. For the rest of the game Negaunee struggled to gain their footing. In the late stages of the game, Iron Mountain drove the length of the field and Johnson ran the ball in to seal the win, 12-9.

Negaunee’s next game is Thursday, August 30th against the Calumet Copper Kings. Pregame starts at 6:30 pm with kickoff at 7:00 pm. Listen to all the action on Sunny FM.
