Negaunee, Michigan– 01/16/2018– The Negaunee Miners High School Girls basketball team stayed home this Tuesday night to take on the Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils. The Miner ladies came into this game with a perfect record 9-0 while the Blue Devils were 5-2. This game brought a lot of anticipation from the Negaunee fans. Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils had also taken on St. Ignace and did a fairly good job. If the Miners could beat the Blue Devils, they had a chance at the #1 team in the area’s polls (St. Ignace). Good news for the Miners Girls team as they are #2 in the polls for the area. Brady Guilbault and Jesse Anderson brought you all of the play-by-play action on Sunny FM.
The tip-off was won by the Blue Devils to start off the game. Sault Ste. Marie scored the first two points and Abby Nelson scored right back with a great offensive rebound for the Miners. Negaunee managed to keep the lead over the Sault but only by three at the end of the first (10-7). Brady and Jesse agreed that it was a slow start for the Miners and their defense was good but they needed to get their offense moving. A really dedicated Natalie Bartle dove into the bleachers to save the ball about half way through the second quarter for the Miners. During the second quarter the Miners didn’t shoot as well as they could have but they were able to keep their lead by two points at the half (20-18).
The Blue Devils tied the score in the beginning of the third quarter (20-20). Clara Johnson answered right back with two points of her own to put the Miners back in the lead right after the Blue Devils scored. Brady and Jesse had said that the Sault was a pretty good offensive team and Negaunee was doing a good job holding them. Natalie Bartle had a pretty good run in the third quarter and scored the last two points to give the Miners an eight point lead (38-30). Into the fourth quarter, the Miners had put more effort on their plays. The Blue Devils only managed to score 6 times. Negaunee took the win over Sault Ste. Marie to continue their perfect game streak and change their record to 10-0!

Mackenzie Kalchik scored the most points for the Blue Devils (8) with Kayla Wilhelms following closely with 6 points. Abby Nelson scored 18 points for the Miners with 7 rebounds, 1 steal and 2 assists. Natalie Bartle had 15 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals, and 3 assists. Clara Johnson scored 9 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists. 2 points were scored by both Allyson Jacobson (who also had 5 rebounds) and Mykenna Kontio (who also had 2 steals. Ielee Shiroda rounded off the Miners with 1 rebound and 1 steal.
** The next Miners game will be this Thursday, January 18th as the Boys Basketball team travels to take on the Gladstone Braves. The pre-game for that game will around 6:50pm and the tip-off will be at 7:20pm. The next girls game will be this Friday, January 19th as they travel to Westwood to take on the Patriots.
