02/03/15 Gladstone, Michigan – The Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team traveled to Gladstone, Michigan tonight for a non-conference battle with the Gladstone Braves. Carl Leander Johnson, the voice of the Negaunee Miners and Jesse Anderson were there to bring you all the exciting action on Sunny.FM.
The Braves won the tip to start the game, but the Miners were first to score with a 3 pointer from Adena Anderson. The opening few minutes were slow between these two non-conference foes, as neither scored again until just under five minutes left to go in the quarter on a single Braves’ free throw. Negaunee’s Courtney Finnila was aggressive for much of the first half, and gave Negaunee a 5-2 lead. After another bucket from Negaunee, Gladstone would score five straight points to tie it up at seven with just ten second left in the opening frame. As time wound down, Aleda Johnson brought the ball up, and after a few passes, ended up putting up a buzzer-beating three-pointer that swooshed through the net to give Negaunee a 10-7 lead going into the second quarter.
Negaunee looked like they were on a mission to snap the losing streak they had to the Braves, as they came into the second quarter and scored a quick basket to lead 12-7. The Braves would turn up the intensity level, however, and were able to go on a 8-4 run in the middle of the quarter, as Leigha Woelffer & Alexis St. Cyr gave the Braves a spark they needed. Up 19-15, the Miners fell apart to end the quarter as fatigue set in and the Braves used it to their advantage to take their first lead of the game; going into the break leading Negaunee 23-19!
Negaunee came out swinging in the third quarter, and a long two-pointer from Courtney Clickner, along with an Aleda Johnson three-pointer brought the Miners within one of the Braves 25-24. Unfortunately for the Miners, this would mark the begininning of a nine-minute field goal drought that would put the game out of reach as we neared the final buzzer. After three, the Braves led 32-24, and never looked back.
Woelffer would continue her great game, ending with a game-high 15 points & 7 rebounds, as teammate Ashley Edwardsen would finish with eight. Alexis St. Cyr finished with six points and eight rebounds. The Miners rough shooting night continued in the fourth quarter, but eventually they hit some shots to end of the game, including five points from Courtney Clickner who hit a three pointer and hit two fouls after the final buzzer to bring the Miners within eight to end the game. It was all moot point though, as the final score wasn’t a true indicator of how this game went. The Braves were able to shut down the Miner attack, which has done well in second halves this season, and really fired on all cylinders offensively.
