01/27/15 Iron Mountain, Michigan – The Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball team traveled to Iron Mountain, Michigan tonight to face the Iron Mountain Mountaineers in a MPC battle. Carl Leander Johnson, the voice of the Negaunee Miners and Jesse Anderson were there to bring you all the exciting basketball action on Sunny.FM.
The Mountaineers won the tip, but the Negaunee would be the first to put points on the board on a Rob Loy jumper to lead 2-0 early in the first quarter. This game was a defensive battle from the get-go. The Miners would lead 4-2 halfway through the period, but the Mountaineers wouldn’t go away. Both teams were on point defensively, as 6’7” Jake Thomann made things difficult for Negaunee post-man Jay Lori, who would be held without a point for the first time in his varsity career. Not only did Thomann hold down Lori, he made every drive to the basket more difficult for the Negaunee guards. Negaunee’s defense, meanwhile didn’t allow the Mountaineers to get anything going either, leading after one 7-6.
The first 4.5 minutes of the second quarter were nothing more than a series of turnovers, missed shots, and rebounds as neither team scored until there were three and a minutes left. Logan Streeter would end the scoring drought by sinking a free throw, the Miners’ only free throw attempts of the night. Iron Mountain would score on the next possession to tie the score at eight. Rob Loy tried to keep the Miners’ offense in the game, by draining a big three pointer from the top of the key. The offensive spark was short-lived, however, as Iron Mountain’s Tanner Huotori came down the court, went off of a screen and hit a three of his own to answer, and tie the game at 11. Iron Mountain would end the first half on an 8-0 run to go into the break up 16-11.
The halftime adjustments made the Iron Mountain completely changed the game. Negaunee, who is notorious for ‘switching’ on screens was taken advantage of by coach Johnson of the Mountaineers. He was able to get 6’3” PF Carson Wonders the ball underneath with 5’10” Ben Luke, who is an excellent perimeter defender, covering him. The Mountaineers started off the quarter with three straight buckets from Wonders from the right block, opening up a 22-11 lead. The latter of that score would stay the same until the seven minute mark of the fourth quarter, as the Miners went into the fourth trailing 27-11; shut out in the quarter.
Negaunee finally began to get aggressive in the game and Rob Loy scored his team-high seventh point to cut the lead to 14, giving the Miners a chance to come back. Jay Lori’s struggles continued, as he couldn’t get past the Mountaineers double & triple teams to score. Iron Mountain would allow just six points in the second half, and cruised to the victory 33-17 to claim sole possession of first place in the MPC.
