01/16/15 L’Anse, Michigan – The Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball team was in L’Anse, Michigan tonight to face the L’Anse Purple Hornets. Carl Leander Johnson, the voice of the Negaunee Miners and Jesse Anderson were there to bring you all the exciting action on Sunny.FM.
The Negaunee Miners started the game by winning the tip and getting two quick buckets from Jay Lori giving Negaunee the lead. The offensive struggles from Tuesday’s win over Ishpeming were a thing a the past as the Miners, led by Dre Tuominen, jumped all over L’Anse on the scoreboard. Negaunee would lead 9-0 before the Hornets would sink a single free-throw. A quarter that saw Dre Tuominen knock down six points, pull in six rebounds, and dish out three assists gave the Miners a 20-6 lead after one on SunnyFM!
L’Anse would get within 10 as they hit the first two shots of the second quarter, but the Hornets had no answer for Jay Lori down low and he had his way, giving Negaunee a 28-10 lead. After Dre Tuominen and L’Anse’s Cody Clement traded threes, the Miners would end the first half with a comfortable 31-13 halftime lead over L’Anse.
Despite leading by 18, Coach Dan Waterman wanted to use this time to give his players a chance to get more familiar with the offense and kept his starters on the floor for much of the third quarter. This is when Jay Lori completely took over, scoring another eight of his game-high 21 points. Having such a lead also did give coach Waterman a chance to see how other players could play with is main core group. Players like Parer Bowman, Tyler Ryan, and Jacob Paupore saw significant minutes in the second half, and did not disappoint.
One spark for L’Anse was Trevor Uren, who was able to score and impressive twelve straight points for his team, keeping the game from getting completely out of hand. Despite being in foul trouble for much of the second half, due to a technical foul, guard Raymond Miron also had a few nice plays, scoring 11 points in the contest. It was Negaunee’s night though, plain and simple, as every single Miner would make their mark on the scoreboard once junior Tyler Ryan drained a three pointer with just over a minute left. The MPC took home bragging rights over the PAC after this one, as the Miners would coast to an impressive 61-34 win.
