01/15/15 Gwinn, Michigan – The Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team was in beautiful New Swanzy, Michigan tonight to take on their MPC rival Gwinn Modeltowners. Carl Leander Johnson, the voice of the Negaunee Miners, and Jesse Anderson were there to bring you all the exciting basketball action on SunnyFM.
The first couple of minutes of the opening quarter started slowly for both teams, but with five minutes left in the quarter the Miners finally scored the first points of the game on two Aleda Johnson free-throws. Once there were points on the board, Negaunee jumped on the ModelTowners offensively. Courtney Finnila & Ashley Tresedder each tossed in two points apiece, and Courtney Clickner swooshed a long three-pointer along continued their scoring spree and opened up a 9-0 with three minutes left in the first. Gwinn eventually figured out to get the ball down to their 6’2” junior Tori Lauren who knocked down Gwinn’s first bucket of the night. Gwinn would continue to gain some momentum as they scored six straight points and cut the lead to three. Negaunee would score the last points of the quarter to end it up 11-6.
The Modeltowners got the ball to start the second quarter and scored immediately to get back within three. Negaunee’s lead would remain at three for the next few minutes as the two teams traded a three pointer apiece. Ashley Tresedder would take the ball to the bucket a couple of times, and Hayley Fezatt hit a three pointer as the Miners pushed their lead to 21-13 and went into halftime with a sizable lead.
Negaunee had the first possession of the second half and made it count as Courtney Finilla was able to hit a long two-pointer to open up a double-digit lead. With the Miners up 23-13, both offenses started heating up. Negaunee’s Adena Anderson & Gwinn’s Ellie Olsen traded buckets to start off the half, and Negaunee was able to hold off the rejuvenated ModelTowner attack, going into the final frame leading 33-25.
The eight point lead would end up being the theme of the fourth quarter as Gwinn tried everything they could to get back into the game. They did fight their way back, outscoring the Miners 9-4 to start off the fourth, getting within three 37-34. Unfortunately for the ModelTowners, they struggled at the free-throw line down the stretch, and Negaunee would hit theirs to get their lead back to eight. Sophomore Aleda Johnson & junior Courtney Finnila combined for seven points in the quarter and was able to clear the Miners’ path to victory!
