GLADSTONE, MI – 12/19/14 – The Negaunee Miners wrestling team may be young, but they are definitely learning quickly how to wrestle at the varsity level.  In a meet that featured Negaunee, Marquette, Iron Mountain, and Gladstone, the Miners were able to knock down their MPC foe in the Mountaineers, but couldn’t keep up with the Redmen.

In their losses to Marquette, 160-pound Dylan Johnson was able to pick up a pin just 1:33 in to his match, as he had victories in both of his matches.  In the 285 class, sophomore Mike Pizziola absolutely dominated both matches, including a 0:25 pin over Marquette’s Zack Albright and a 1:37 pin over Iron Mountain.  Negaunee knocked off the Mountaineers 36-24, but the Redmen took the second set of Negaunee’s matches 48-18.

The final stats are as follows:

  • 119 – Cody Niskanen went 1-1
  • 145 – Zack Champion went 0-2
  • 152 – Mark Herring went 1-1
  • 160 – Dylan Johnson went 2-0 (pin vs. Marquette in 1:33)
  • 171 – Austin Schmeltz went 1-1
  • 189 – Kyle Scheiding went 1-1
  • 215 – Austin Argall went 1-0 (pin vs. Marquette in 0:57)
  • 215 – Sam Collins went 1-1 (pin vs. Iron Mountain)
  • 285 – Mike Pizziola went 2-0 (pin vs. IM in 1:37; pin vs. Mqt in 0:25)

The Miners next meet is this Saturday (12/20) at Marquette Senior High School.  Good luck Miners!
