12/05/14 Manistique, Michigan– The Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team traveled to Manistique, Michigan tonight to face the their MPC rivals in the Manistique Emeralds. Carl Leander Johnson, the voice of the Negaunee Miners was there to bring you all the exciting basketball action LIVE on Sunny.FM.
Manistique won the tip to start the game, but Ashley Tresedder of Negaunee was able to score first, giving Negaunee an early lead. With three minutes left in the quarter the Negaunee Miners defense was on fire and led 9-0 over Manistique. They faltered slightly, however, and finished the quarter only up six, 11-5 on SunnyFM!
Aleda Johnson scored the first points of the second quarter with a beautiful three-point shot to push Negaunee’s lead to nine. Manistique wasn’t going to just lie down though, and battled back to get within three, 14-11. Negaunee was able to collect itself defensively and even finished up the rest of the quarter by knocking in two more to take a five-point lead into halftime.
The Miners exploded out of the gates in the third quarter and pushed the lead to 22-11, with five minutes left in the quarter. With just under four minutes left in the quarter the Emeralds put some points on the board and trailed 23-13. Negaunee completely dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Emeralds 11-4 and took a comfortable 27-15 lead going into the final frame.
The Miners continued to put up a great defensive game, and built their offense accordingly. They pushed their lead to 16 on a few nice plays by Aleda Johnson & Ashley Tresedder, and Negaunee led 31-15. Negaunee cruised the rest of the way and eventually built up a 20+ point lead that would stand pat for the rest of the game. Negaunee won this one 41-20 over their MPC foe.
Negaunee was led once again by their standout sophomore point guard Aleda Johnson (12 points, 10 reb, 3 stl, and 2 assts). Courtney Clickner was able to capitalize on some good defense from her teammates and scored on a few fast break opportunities to toss in seven points herself. Senior wing-player Ashley Tresedder and senior center Hailee Richards each had six points. Sophomore Hailey Fezatt had a much improved game from her debut, and scored four points to go with six rebounds and a pair of steals. Negaunee was able to pull down 44 rebounds as a team and stole the ball 16 times!
