12/02/14 Negaunee, Michigan –  The defending MPC Champion Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team opened their season tonight at home against their GNC non-conference rival Gladstone Braves.  Carl Leander Johnson, the voice of the Negaunee Miners and his partner Jesse Anderson were there to bring you all the exciting action on Sunny.FM.

Negaunee won the tip and junior guard Courtney Finnilla scored the first points of the season for the Miners to give them the 2-0 lead.  The Miners started out hot, and pushed their lead to 10-4 with just over two minutes left in the quarter.  Their aggressive style of defense led to some trouble, however, and finished the quarter with nine fouls that led to Gladstone tying up the game.

Negaunee was the first to put points on the board in the second quarter, but the Braves answered back quickly and tied the score at 12.  The Braves took their first lead of the night against the Miners on the next possession. Gladstone maintained heavy pressure on the Miners and widened the lead 18-12 half way through the quarter. Courtney Finnila knocked down a three point shot to cut the lead down to three, 18-15.  That’s when the Braves took off.  After a series of Miner miscues on offense, the Braves were able to pushed their lead to 15, and went into halftime up 32-17.

Senior guard Courtney Clicker started off the second half with a three pointer, to pull the Miners within 12.  The Miners continued to struggle offensively and Gladstone was able to capitalize and maintain their already sizeable leader and push it to 40-24 early in the quarter.  Gladstone continued to make things difficult for the Miners, forcing turnovers and making them take difficult shots.  They were able to effectively move the ball and make some good moves that led to an 18 point lead after three.

Courtney Clickner opened the fourth quarter the same way she opened the third:  knocking down a big three point shot for the Miners to cut the lead to 46-31. Negaunee started to come alive during the fourth quarter, led by sophomore point guard Aleda Johnson, whose aggressive play on both ends of the of the floor brought Negaunee back within nine points of the Braves.  It wasn’t meant to be on this night, however, as the comeback was just too little too late and the Braves were able to play keep away and sink some free throws to push their lead to 15 by the time the final buzzer sounded.

The Gladstone Braves defeated the Negaunee Miners (54-39) on Sunny.FM.

The Miners were led tonight by their sophomore point guard Alexa Johnson, whose hustle gave her a very impressive stat line of 14 points, five rebounds and a steal.  The two Courtneys (Finnila & Clicker) chipped in a combined 17 points and were able to use the long ball to collect nine of those 17.  Foul trouble bit the Miners particularly tonight, as senior defensive standouts Ashley Tresedder and Courtney Finnila both fouled out before it was all said and done.

Join Carl Leander Johnson the voice of the Negaunee Miners on Friday December 5th, 2014 as they bring you some exciting MPC girls basketball action.
