10-18-2013 Negaunee, Michigan – It’s Football Night again in Negaunee on Sunny.FM!  This week the Negaunee Miners took on nearby rivals the Marquette Redmen on their home turf at Miner’s Field in Neguanee and this was a special night as the Miners battled to regain the coveted Diamond Jubilee Trophy back from the Redmen!

Like the previous week’s game against the Hematites this was another highly anticipated game as both teams have been playing strong this season!  Read on for a recap of game highlights or listen to all the action in our Negaunee Miners football archives brought to you by Sunny.FM sports castor Carl Johnson.

It’s Football Night in Negaunee on Sunny.FM! Marquette started the game with possession of the ball but scored no points during their first run. As Neagunee took control of the ball LaJoie didn’t waste any time scoring the first touchdown of the game for Negaunee and putting the score at 6-0 Miners.  During the next possession for Marquette Brett Beauchamp made good yardage for the Redmen followed up with a touchdown by Paul Smith and they kicked the extra point to inch ahead of Negaunee. They ended the first quarter at 7-6 Marquette

At the End of the First Quarter:
Negaunee Miners: 6
Marquette Redmen: 7

It’s Football Night in Negaunee on Sunny.FM and the Redmen started the second quarter with a shocking kick into the end zone by #35.  This didn’t slow the Miners down a bit as they quickly moved the ball down the field and LaJoie plowed into the end zone to score the second touchdown of the game for Negaunee while they also made the 2 point conversion to take the lead over Marquette at 14-7 Negaunee!  As the Redmen took possession of the ball Negaunee didn’t give them any wiggle room and played a powerful defensive game “laying down the lumber” (which means that they were hitting hard – for the football lingo illiterate like me!) Marquette was unable to move the ball once again and scored no points in the second quarter.  The Miners however scored a third touchdown by LaJoie with a 2 point conversion by Syrjala to bring the score to 22-7 Negaunee.

At the End of the Second Quarter:
Negaunee Miners: 22
Marquette Redmen: 7

It’s Football Night in Negaunee on Sunny.FM and Negaunee continued to dominate both sides of the ball throughout the third quarter.  The Miner’s strong defense kept the Redmen from getting any points on the board while Negaunee drove forward to score two more touchdowns. First one by Syrjala and then on their next possession LaJoie threw people off left and right to score a touchdown followed up by a successful pass thrown by Syrjala to Radloff to make the 2 point conversion and end the third quarter with a score of 38-7 Negaunee!

At the End of the Third Quarter:
Negaunee Miners: 38
Marquette Redmen: 7

Football Night in Negaunee on Sunny.FM and the cold temperatures were visibly taking their toll on the players on the field! The Redmen took control of the ball for a moment in the start of the fourth quarter and were able to score with a fantastic run into the end zone by Burmeister. They followed up with a punt for an additional point and closed the gap slightly to 38-14 Negaunee.  However, this was the end of their run as the time ran out and no further points were put on the board by either team and so ended the game at 38-14 Negaunee!  This was a special win for the Miners as they won the Diamond Jubilee Trophy back from Marquette for the first time since 2009! Congrats Negaunee!

At the End of the Fourth Quarter – Final Score:
Negaunee Miners: 38
Marquette Redmen: 14
