The Negaunee Miners look to defend their home court in a conference battle against rival Ishpeming. Heather Seppenan has the call on Sunny 101.9 WKQS.

Negaunee, Michigan– The Miners get on the board first with a layup in the early goings of the first quarter. Rosalie Anderson scores for Negaunee on a inbound play to push the Miner lead to 6-0. Ishpeming gets on the board, midway through the quarter as they convert a layup. The Miners lead 8-2 with just over three minutes to play. With 2:19 to go in the opening period, it’s Negaunee holding a 8-4 edge. The Miners connected on their first 3-pointer to push the lead to 11-8. As the buzzer sounds, Ishpeming commits a foul. The Miners sink a pair to add to their lead.

First quarter:

Negaunee: 13     Ishpeming: 4

The Hematites get on the board first in the second quarter, hitting a pair of free throws to cut the Miners lead to 13-6. Ashley Veale hits a layup and gets fouled in the process, as Negaunee jumps ahead 15-6. The Miners force Ishpeming into an offensive foul as both teams have hit a scoring drought midway through the second quarter. After sinking a pair of free throws, Ishpeming cuts the Miner lead to 16-8. With just over two minutes to play in the first half, Negaunee is in the bonus. With 1:26 to play in the second quarter, it’s 19-12 Negaunee. Ishpeming uses a barrage of free throws to cut into the Miner lead.

Halftime score:

Negaunee: 21      Ishpeming: 16

Ishpeming scores first to start the second half of action, pulling the deficit to three points. The Hematites tie it up with a 3-pointer and force a turnover on the ensuing possession. With 6:35 to play the game, Ishpeming takes their first lead of the game, 22-21. Negaunee gets on the board with a pair of baskets to retake the lead. Both teams trade buckets and with with five minutes to play in the third quarter the score is deadlocked at 27 apiece. With 4:27 left in the quarter, it’s a 29-27 Negaunee lead. Rosalie Anderson hits a pair from the line to give the Miners a 31-27 lead.

Third quarter:

Negaunee: 32     Ishpeming: 27

The Miners start the fourth quarter scoring on back-to-back possessions, giving them a 36-27 lead. The Hematites continue to put on the full-court press as they look to climb back into the game. Ashley Veale hits a pair of free throws to give the Miners a 38-29 lead. With four minutes to play in the final frame, Negaunee clings to a 42-35 lead. Rosalie Anderson scores off the assist from Ashley Veale as Negaunee takes a nine point lead with just over three minutes to play. With 1:30 left, Negaunee is fighting off the Ishpeming attack, as they lead 46-38. The Miners hit their shots down the stretch as they pull ahead by 10 points in the final seconds.

Negaunee fights off a second half Ishpeming charge to come away with the win. The Miners are 10-1 overall and undefeated in conference play.
