The Negaunee Miners take down the Gwinn Modeltowners to improve to 4-1.

Negaunee, Michigan– A floater from five feet out breaks open the scoreless game as Gwinn takes a 2-0 lead early in the first minutes. With 4:

44 left in the first the game is tied 4-4. Tanner Uren picks up the four point play as Negaunee tak

es a 7-4 lead. Early foul trouble for the Modeltowners as their leading scorer has picked up two early. Both teams have put on the press early in the game. The Miners hold a 12-8 lead with just under two minutes left to play. Brock Weaver blocks the Gwinn shot attempt to end the first quarter.

First quarter:

Negaunee: 16          Gwinn: 8

The Miners pick up two quick buckets to start the second quarter as they jump out to a 20-8 lead. With 5:30 left to play the Miners lead 22-11. Gwinn gets tagged with an intentional foul, as Negaunee gets a pair of free throws and the ball back, with 3:11 left in the first half. Tanner Uren pushes the Negaunee lead to 14 points after a layup.

The Miners take advantage of solid guard play and forced turnovers to extend their lead in the second quarter.

Halftime score:

Negaunee: 31          Gwinn: 15

Brock Weaver hits the layup to open up the 3rd quarter as the Miners take a 33-15 lead. With 6:20 to go in the 3rd quarter it’s Negaunee 33, Gwinn 17. Gwinn continues to use a deep rotation but can’t crack into Negaunee’s double-digit lead. Negaunee hits up a 3-pointer, extending the lead to 40-23. The Modeltowners get a pair of buckets to cut the Miner lead to 40-27. Tanner Uren connects on a pair of free throws and a layup pushing the Miner lead to 44-27.

Third quarter:

Negaunee: 49        Gwinn: 27

Tyler Jandron jump starts the Miners offense in the fourth quarter hitting a 3-pointer to extend their lead, 52-29. With 6:33 left to play Negaunee holds a 25-point lead. With 4:30 left to play it’s the Miners holding a 60-39 edge. Uren hits the 20-point mark on the assist from Weaver. The Miners empty the bench with just over three minutes left to go. Gwinn climbs back into the game but they still trail by double-digits. Gwinn goes on a mini-run to get the game close with 13 seconds left.

Negaunee responds from their loss to Marquette to pick up their first conference win  and improve to 4-1. The Miners use a strong presence on the boards and solid guard play to pull away from the Modeltowners.

Negaunee: 64       Gwinn: 57
