Negaunee, MI – March 8, 2023 – The Negaunee Miner Boys hosted the District Semifinals and faced off against the Kingsford Flivvers. Carl Leander Johnson was on the scene for Sunny 101.9.
The Kingsford Flivvers started the game strong by winning the tip off and immediately hit a three. Gavin Downey of Negaunee wasted no time in responding with a three of his own. Ty Jacobson was fouled shortly after and successfully sunk both free throws. The Miners were up two-points halfway through the quarter. Negaunee was up 14-8 with one minute left in the quarter. The Flivvers didn’t back down and continued to narrow the scoring gap.

Kingsford took back the lead once again to start the second quarter. The Miners were down eight and determined to find a solution to their scoring struggles. A well executed pass from Evan Gauthier set up Brodin Bell for a three pointer. At halftime, the Miners found themselves trailing by seven.

Kingsford came out hot at the half and forced Negaunee to call a timeout. Negaunee got the answer they were looking for, Mason Sager scored out of the timeout. Quickly after, Ty Jacobson also had a successful shot. The Miners still trailed and were looking to get back within single digits. The Miners were down 37-27 with three minutes left in the third. Gavin Saunders scored and pulled the Miners back in by six. The Flivvers went on a 4-0 run, that put the Miners down by 10 at the end of the quarter.

Negaunee trailed by 13 halfway through the fourth quarter. Mason Sager was determined to get back in the game and made a three point play. The Flivvers tried to run down the clock in efforts to keep possession of their lead. The Miners went into full court press after cutting the lead to nine. The Negaunee boys were unable to make a comeback, resulting in a victory for the Flivvers.
