Negaunee Miner Girls Basketball Team Defeats Calumet Copper Kings In Semifinal District Playoff Match 51-49

Negaunee, MiMarch 1st, 2023The Negaunee Miner Girls fought hard against the Calumet Copper Kings in the Semifinal Match of District Playoffs. Carl Leander Johnson was on the scene for Sunny 101.9

The first quarter had a strong start. Madison Pekril drew first blood with a two-pointer, starting the Miners off with the lead. Viering of Calumet scored afterwards, tying the game for the Copper Kings. Ella Mason scored a three pointer in retaliation, before Calumet tied the game yet again. Viering scored a two pointer for the Copper Kings, stealing the lead. Grace Nardi scored twice at the free throw line in retaliation, tying the match yet again. Caraniemi of Calumet stole the lead once more with a three pointer. The Miners stopped the scoring drought, cutting Calumet’s lead down to one. Calumet continued to climb to a score of twelve before the buzzer beat. 12-9

The second quarter was filled with fast action. Aubrey Johnson brought the Miners cut the lead down to a point. Ella Mason stole the lead with a three-pointer thanks to a pass from Grace Nardi. Grace Nardi reached five individual points, bringing the Miners to a seven point lead. Ella Mason scored her third three pointer of the night, causing the student section to erupt. Ella was sent to the free throw line afterwards for two, and sank both shots. The Copper Kings fought back, cutting the lead down to four. Coach O’Donnell called a timeout, only for Katelyn Straud of Calumet to cut the lead down to two before the buzzer. 22-20

The third quarter moved quickly. Cooper Atkins scored a two pointer after lots of back and fourth. Calumet cut the Miners lead back down to two with a floater. Cooper Atkins scored another two points from the free throw line shortly after. After some excellent teamwork, Ella Mason knocked down a bucket bringing the Miners to a lead of six. The crowd’s cheers and whistles filled the gym. Calumet cut the lead down to four before a timeout was called. After the timeout, Ella Mason scored at the free throw line. Cooper Atkins scored a two pointer afterwards, bringing the Miners to a lead of seven. Ella Mason scored her fourth free throw of the night thanks to a pass from Atkins. Allison Bjorn of Calumet scored twice at the free throw line. Theresa Anderson passed to Pekril, who scored the same. 36-31

The fourth quarter was intense! Ella Mason hit a three pointer and a two pointer in succession to start off the quarter. Calumet’s coach called a timeout immediately afterwards. Calumet fought back, cutting the Miners lead down to five. A few questionable calls were played, resulting in the student sections boos. Ella Mason knocked down a floater, bringing the Miners to a score of forty-three. Another foul call was played against Grace Nardi, resulting in over a minute of boos to echo through the gymnasium. Ella Mason was sent to the free throw line for two, and scored twice. Calumet fought hard in the final moments of the match, bringing the Miners lead down to two before a timeout. After the timeout, Atkins scored a two pointer resulting in two more timeouts. Caraniemi of Calumet scored a three pointer afterwards, causing yet another timeout. Ella Mason was sent to the line with fifteen seconds left, and scored twice. Another timeout was called, and Grace Nardi got fouled with five seconds on the clock and scored twice. 51-49
