Negaunee, Mi – February 8, 2023 – The Negaunee Miner Boys hosted the Manistique Emeralds on Wednesday night. Carl Leander Johnson was on the scene for Sunny 101.9.
Manistique won the tip and got the game started. The Miners got their first points of the game from Ty Jacobson. Two minutes left in the first, the Miners found themselves in a one point game. The Miners found a way to get the ball in the basket to give them their first lead of the night. After a quick 10 minutes, Negaunee was up one to end the quarter.
Mason Sager hit a jump shot within the first seconds of the quarter. The Miners took a seven point lead in the opening minutes of the quarter. The boys went into a zone defense that gave Manistique some scoring troubles. Mason Sager got open and hit an easy three pointer for Negaunee. The Miners got themselves a lead of 13 with two minutes to go. A great effort from Negaunee in the second quarter put them ahead as they moved into the second half of the game.
To start the third, Miners went back up by 13 with an easy bucket. With the Emeralds struggling to score, the Miners continued to push their lead. Manistique called a timeout with hopes to stop Negaunee. The Emeralds effort wasn’t enough, Brody Bell got a steal that helped the team gain another two points. Shortly after, Mason Sager went to the free throw line for a pair and made both. The Miners were up 27 to end the third quarter.
Manistique got themselves out of a scoring drought and got a basket to start the fourth. However, it wasn’t enough to stop the Miners. Brody Bell executed another impressive take. The Emeralds continued to struggle due to the Miners lock down defense. Evan Gauthier made his way to the free throw line and sunk both. Alec Nelson hit a shot at the end of the quarter and made the student section go wild. Negaunee had a great team effort that helped put them on top to end the game.
