Negaunee Girls Hit Buzzer Beater to Win Against Calumet Copper Kings 44-43

Negaunee, Mi February 7, 2023 The Negaunee Miner Girls hosted the Calumet Copper Kings on Tuesday night. Carl Leander Johnson was on the scene for Sunny 101.9.

The Kings started off by getting the first two points of the game. Great defense made it tough to get the ball in the basket for both teams. The Miners found themselves down six with two minutes to go. The girls had good ball movement, but it wasn’t enough to catch up to the Kings in the first quarter. Ella Mason stopped the scoring drought and hit a free throw and a layup shortly after to end the quarter. 13-8

The second quarter started with some great defense from the Miners that forced a turnover. Aubrey Jonson then hit a fade away jumper from the free throw line to help the team. The Miners offense started to find some rhythm and Grace Nardi got another basket. The Miners were down 20-12 half way through the quarter. Johnson found a way to get two points for the Miners before then end of the quarter. Negaunee trailed by 11 as they headed into the second half of the game.27-16

The third quarter began with Aubrey Johnson who got the first points of the second half. The Miners got themselves back to seven halfway through the quarter. Calumet didn’t make it easy and got another basket to widen their lead. Grace Nardi soon got the ball in the basket for Negaunee, making the score 29-22. Johnson cut it to five with two minutes to go. Cooper Atkins got a huge basket for the Miners to cut the Kings lead down to two. Another big play to end the third quarter from Aubrey Johnson. A great effort from Negaunee that sent them into the fourth with a score of 32-30.

To start the forth the Miners got the first basket to tie up the game. Aubrey Johnson hit a shot that got the team their first lead of the night. Aubrey Johnson had a heck of a ball game and continued to score. Ella Mason got a basket and put the Miners up three. A close game in the last minute had the crowd nervous. Calumet hit a three point shot and got the lead. Negaunee didn’t stop and got another basket. The Kings got a layup shortly after and took the lead once again. Cooper Atkins hit the game winning bucket with one second left on the clock. 44-43
