Gladstone, Mi– January 31st, 2022– The Negaunee Miners fought hard on the basketball court Tuesday night against the Gladstone Girls. Carl Leander Johnson was on the scene for Sunny 101.9
The first quarter started off strong, with Aubrey Johnson scoring a two pointer within less than a minute. The Miners continued to score, Grace Nardi scored a two pointer as well before Addie Trombley scored a two pointer for Gladstone. Clare O’Donnell scored a three pointer, followed by Ella Mason who scored a three pointer as well, furthering the Miners lead to nine. Gladstone scored another two pointer shortly after before a timeout. Ella Mason knocked a two pointer down after the timeout, bringing her to a score of five. Cooper Atkins scored a three pointer as well, making every Negaunee starter score. Ella Mason scored another two pointer before another timeout. Gladstone continued to fight back, with little success. Clare O’Donnell scored twice at the free throw line, bringing the Miners back to a lead of double digits. Gladstone cut the lead back to single digits at the free throw line shortly after. The Miners finished off the quarter with a lead of nine. 19-10
The second quarter was intense. It started off with Clare O’Donnell scoring a point at the free throw line, before Ella Mason reached double digits. Ella scored another two pointer before Gladstone cut the lead back to single digits. Cooper Atkins followed Gladstone, bringing the lead back to ten points. Ella Mason scored a three pointer, followed by Clare O’Donnell who scored a two pointer with less than ten seconds in the half. 33-17
The third quarter moved quickly, with Lily Johnson of Gladstone starting off scoring at the free throw line. Aubrey Johnson scored a two pointer, starting off the Miners half. Negaunee continued to climb to a score of thirty-seven thanks to Aubrey Johnson. Theresa scored her first points of the night, bringing the Miners to their biggest lead of the match at nineteen points. Grace Nardi scored as well, with an assist from Seere Helms-Gleason. 41-20
The fourth quarter had an insane ending. Gladstone got the ball at tip-off, scoring eight points before the Miners called a timeout. Ella Mason scored a point at the free throw line after the timeout, breaking Gladstone’s run. Aliana Martinez of Gladstone brought the Miners lead back down to ten points. After some contest, Aubrey Johnson scored another two pointer. Gladstone cut them down another two points at the free throw line shortly after. After lots of back and forth, Gladstone brought the lead down to seven at the free throw line before a timeout was called. After the timeout, she scored yet again. The Miners finished off the match with an 11 win streak and a winning score of 44-38.
