Negaunee, MiJanuary 20th, 2023The Negaunee Miner Girls fought hard in the first game of a double header against the Westwood Patriots Friday night. Carl Leander Johnson was on the scene for Sunny 101.9

Clair O’Donnell started off the first quarter for the Miners as she made her way to the free throw line and got two points for the team. Aubrey Johnson followed with the second basket of the game. Ella Mason hit a shot quickly after. The patriots didn’t back down and cut the lead in half with a three pointer. The Miners scored again making the score 8-3. Ella Mason fought through some tough defense and got another basket. Theresa Anderson got her first basket of the game shortly after subbing in. Aubrey Johnson helped the Miners gain a lead of eight. 14-6

The Patriots started off strong, cutting the lead to three. Ella Mason got a basket to help gain the lead back. The Miners defense wasn’t enough to stop the Patriots as they cut the lead back down to one. After a long quarter of struggling to score, Theresa Anderson got the Miners two points. Cooper Atkins put the miners back up five with a jump shot to end the quarter. 20-15

The third quarter started off quickly with a basket by Grace Nardi. The Patriots came out with a full court press causing the Miners to struggle. Mason gained two points with a shot from the block. Ella Mason scored again for Negaunee and put the Miners back up nine. The Miners were on the attack and Ella Mason got the team another three points forcing Westwood to call a timeout. The Miners found themselves another two points shortly after. Neguanee worked to get another shot to end the quarter, but couldn’t get one to fall. The Miners end the third with a 12 point lead. 32-20

To start off the fourth quarter of the game Isabelle Marta from Westwood gets the first basket. Aubrey Johnson had a nice take and got another two points. O’Donnell put the ball in the hoop for the Miners to widen their lead even more. Grace Nardi got to the free throw line and pushed the lead to fourteen. Nardi got another two point basket for Negaunee. The Miners continued to push the ball and Aubrey Johnson got the last basket of the game.
