West Iron County, Mi– January 10th, 2023– The Negaunee Miner Girls went head to head with the Iron County Wykons, Carl Leander Johnson was on the scene for Sunny 101.9
The first quarter started off strong, with Grace Nardi scoring a three pointer and two pointer within the first two minutes of the match. After some competition from the Wykons, Ella Mason scored a three pointer bringing the Miners lead back to five. Aubrey Johnson scored a three pointer as well bringing the Miners to double digits. Ella Mason knocked down a jump shot from the corner, bringing her to five points. Clare O’Donnell scored bringing the Miners to a score of fourteen. The Wykons scored a two pointer in an attempt to lessen Negaunee’s lead. Iron County continued to fight back, but was only able to cut the lead to nine before Theresa Anderson scored a two pointer, ending off the quarter with an overall score of 16-4
The second quarter moved quickly, Cooper Atkins scored a two pointer bringing the Miners to 18. The Wykons continued to fight and cut the lead down to nine. Kali Harty continued to score for the Wykons bringing them to a score of 12. Johnson scored from the free throw line, giving the Miners a chance to widen the lead again. Ella Mason scored a two pointer,followed by yet another bucket from the free throw line. Clare O’Donnell brought the Miners to twenty-five points and an individual score of double digits after fancy footwork from the entire team. Ella Mason scored yet again from the free throw line as well. Ella Mason scored another two pointer ending off the half with an individual score of eleven. 29-14
The third quarter was intense. Clare O’Donnell scored a three pointer to start off the quarter. Wykons bared their claws bringing the lead down to fifteen. Mason sank both her free throws. The Wykons cut the lead down to ten half way through the quarter. Ella Mason hit another free throw, with another two pointer shortly after. Miners end the quarter with a thirteen point lead. 37-24
The fourth quarter was uneventful, despite fast action from Grace Nardi with a lay-up bringing her to an individual score of seven. Grace Nardi sank two free throws bringing the Miners to a score of forty-eight. Clare O’Donnell scored a two pointer finishing off a scoring drought for the Miners. 43-33
