Negaunee, MI – May 18th, 2022 – The Negaunee Miners faced off against the Eskymos of Escanaba this afternoon in high school softball. The game was broadcasted on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9.
Josie Thompson started on the mound for the Miners, as she quickly struggled against the heavy hitting Eskymos. She allowed 5 runs in the top of the first, including a 3-run shot to start the scoring. She gathered composure in the late half of the inning as she was able to strike out the final two outs. With the rapid deficit early on, Negaunee needed some runs of their own, but Escanaba was able to retire the side after 3 consecutive outs.

After a 1st inning to forget, Josie Thompson had an excellent 2nd inning for the Negaunee Miners, as she only allowed one hit before retiring the side. The Eskymos continued to shine on the defensive side, as they denied the Miners once again, to stay perfect heading into the 3rd inning.

Josie Thompson continued to play excellent on the mount as she went 1,2,3 to end what was a very quick top of the 3rd. Sam Richards finally secured a hit for the Miners, as she singled late in the 3rd. Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to find home plate as Escanaba continued to find outs.

The Eskymos got back into the scoring column on an infield RBI, but one score was all. Josie Thompson was able to retire the side after only allowing the one hit. Josie produced offensively as well, as she secured an infield single to begin the inning. Thompson was able to head into scoring position after another single from teammate Lily Nelson. Unfortunately, the Miners had to strand the two runners, after Escanaba successfully got out of the jam.
4th Inning Escanaba 6 Negaunee 0

Escanaba had a great opportunity to get some more runs on the board, as they had runners on the corner. Thankfully, Grace Nardi was able to retire the side after not allowing any. She relieved Josie Thompson to begin the 5th inning. The Miners were once again hit-less in the bottom half of the 5th, as Escanaba continued to hold Negaunee scoreless.

Escanaba scored quickly to begin the 6th, as an error resulted in a single run from one crack to center. More runners crossed the plate late in the top half of the inning, as an RBI double and two solo shots to left field gained an 11-0 advantage for the Eskymos. The Miners needed at least two runs to continue into the 7th inning, but could not. After an excellent 5-run inning in the first, Escanaba easily defeated the Miners by a score of 11-0.

The Miners will continue their spring season on Monday, May 23rd when they host the Houghton Gremlins. The game will begin at 4 PM as you can hear the broadcast on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9.
