Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball Defeat the Gwinn Modeltowners 54-42 on Sunny 101.9!

Negaunee, MIDecember 9th, 2021 – The Negaunee Miners boys basketball team defeat the Gwinn Modeltowners 54-42 on the road. The Miners even their record to 1-1 for the season. Carl Leander Johnson had the call from Gwinn on Sunny 101.9.

1st Quarter: Shafaar Evans kicked off the scoring for Gwinn taking it to the basket for 2 points. Ty Jacobson responds with a physical drive to the paint drawing a shooting foul and making one free throw. Brody Bell gets into early foul trouble with 2 fouls in the games first 5 minutes. Good defensive performances by both the Miners and Modeltowners to end the first quarter.

End of 1st quarter: Negaunee Miners 8, Gwinn Modeltowners 10

2nd Quarter: Negaunee started the second quarter with a resounding 13 point run, with 5 of the unanswered points carrying form the first quarter. This would put the Miners up 17-10 with 5 minutes remaining in the half. Gavin Downey continued his impressive shooting abilities making three 3-pointers in the first two periods. From there, the Modeltowners clawed their way back into the game, with Gwinn’s guard Evans stealing the ball from Mason Sager to make an easy layup as the half expired.

3rd Quarter: The Miners came out of the break on a 16-1 run to completely blow out the lead. Jacobson came alive in the 3rd period on both sides of the ball, continually stealing, blocking shots, and making shots. Gwinn was forced to call several timeouts in the 3rd quarter to help stop the defensive and offensive showing by Negaunee, all to no avail. The Miners ended the 3rd quarter with sights of their first win of the season.

4th Quarter: A lone highlight from the Modeltowners was the persistence of Gwinn’s Carl Peterson throughout the night, especially the 4th period. Peterson would spark the Modeltowners offense to come back within 11 points. Coach Waterman’s team however would control the end of the game, quickly putting away the Modeltowners and sealing their first win of the season.
