Negaunee Football Stomps Manistique 55-8

Negaunee, MISeptember 17, 2021 – Negaunee Miners football defeated the Manistique Emeralds 55-8 under the Friday night lights. Mark Evans and Gregg Nelson were on the call in the Emerald City on Sunny 101.9.

1st Half:

Manistique came out of the gates strong and march down the field on their first possession. The Emeralds nearly went out early but Negaunee jumped on fourth giving Manistique the automatic first down. Another fourth down was converted and the Manistique ended the possession with a touchdown and a two point conversion. The Miners had to make up for a rough defensive possession and that they did as they scored but still trailed 6-8.

2nd Quarter:

The tide changed to start the 2nd quarter as Philip Nelson picked off the Emeralds and ran it back 23 yards for a pick six. The Miners defense looked much improved causing a near fumble and then forcing the Emeralds to give the ball back. Nico Lukkarinen popped through the defense for an 8 yard Miners touchdown giving them the 20-8 lead.
The Manistique offense couldn’t figure their offense out as a poor snap lead to a loss followed by a loss on third and they punted on 4th and 17. The Miners extended their lead again with a 39 yard Philip Nelson touchdown followed by a two point conversion.
Alex Noble gave Manistique life with a 72 yard run but he was stopped at the one yard line. The Emeralds stalled in the redone and turned the ball over on downs. Gerald Johnson quickly tossed it to Philip Nelson who ran it for a 72 yard touchdown. Manistique couldn’t answer and instead fumbled giving the Miners the football back. Nico Lukkarinen kept the Miners rolling with a two yard touchdown, giving Negaunee an even bigger lead and even more momentum going into halftime.

3rd Quarter:

The Miners started the second half with the ball and with that possession they extended their lead to 48-8. It was a rough start to the second half for the Emeralds with a high snap which the Miners recovered. JV RB/LB Kainoa Lacar scored a touchdown for the Miners and then he nailed the extra point with a bomb of a kick, giving Negaunee a 55-8 lead.

4th Quarter:

Manistique’s first possession of the fourth quarter was stalling and ended on a Parker Graphos incompletion. Negaunee gave up their first turnover of the game, giving the Emeralds a chance to get some more points on the board. The Emeralds started moving down the field to end the game but their possession ended with a popped ball and the Miners picked up the fumble to ultimately end the game.
