Negaunee, MI – May 24, 2021 – The Negaunee Miners played host to the Marquette Redmen at Iron Town Field in a varsity baseball doubleheader. Game one was broadcast live on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9!
Marquette struck first in the game in the top of the second inning. Third baseman, Alex Applekamp, recorded a RBI single hitting home Jacob Knauss. The Negaunee Miners made a force out at home plate to stop any more runs form crossing. Negaunee was able to rely on the field to get the rest of the outs to end the inning. Marquette led, 1-0 at the end of two.
Redmen Samuel Bartlett would hit in Applekamp to put Marquette up 2-0 against the Miners in the top half of the fourth inning. Negaunee would end the inning with the second baseman catching the line drive for an out and doubling up the runner on second to complete the double play.
Marquette would tack on another insurance run in the top half of the final inning. Derrick Pederson would bring Bartlett across home plate to make the game, 3-0 in favor of the Redmen.
The final half of the inning saw the Miners trying to complete a storybook ending. Redmen pitcher Justin Wenk was looking to complete the complete game shutout. He started the inning hitting lead-off man, Gerald Johnson with a pitch to put him on first. Harold Johnson then would hit a single to put G. Johnson in scoring position. Keith Juidicy would score the first one with a RBI double scoring, G. Johnson. Hunter Haanppa would tie things up with a 2 RBI double. The catcher Nico Lukkarinen was next to bat. He was able to put the ball into play bringing H. Johnson home, and giving the Miners the walk-off win!
