The game went down to the wire, but the Miner’s defense made some great plays.

Negaunee, MIMay 13, 2021 The Negaunee Miner varsity softball team took on the Gladstone Braves on Thursday afternoon. The game was broadcast live on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1-99.9!

It was quite the defensive ballgame on Thursday. Both teams fielding units were playing exceptional and able to score multiple double plays against one another.

Scoring started with the Negaunee shortstop, Katelyn Lammi crushing the ball for a 3-run homer. That would get the first runs of the game for either team, and gave Negaunee a 3-0 lead.

Gladstone would respond with a home run of their own, coincidentally by their shortstop. LaFave would hit one high and out of the park to get her team in the run column.

The Braves would tack on another run when Buckley would get herself an RBI by hitting in Herioux in the top half of the fifth inning.

Gladstone pitcher, Montgomery Pepin would then find herself in quite a jam. She would walk the lead-off batter, then an error would allow Lammi to reach first base. The Miner catcher, Nelson would hit a single to load up the bases. M. Pepin wouldn’t be able to find her ball control and would walk in a run while putting Larissa Anderson on first. Negaunee would lead 4-2.

Negaunee would find themselves in a world of trouble in the sixth inning. The Braves would load up the bases for their catcher, Trombley who would make the most of the opportunity and crush a bases-clearing grand slam. After rounding the bases, The Braves were up 7-4.

The Miners would not be deterred however. Their first two batters would reach base on balls followed by an out. That would bring up shortstop, Lammi who had hit a home run earlier. She would do so once again with a 3-run shot and tie things up, 7-7.

It all came down to the final inning for these teams to try and break the tie and for one to be crowned the winner. The Braves weren’t able to put any runners across home, and it was up to Neguanee to close it out.

The Miners would have their lead-off hitter walked to first. That was followed up by Nardi being hit by a pitch to put a runner in scoring position for Negaunee. Hendrickson was up to bat next with no outs, and would lay down a bunt to advance the runners. Allie Ennet would be the hero of the game with a single out to shallow right to bring home the winning run.

The Miners would come out on top of the Gladstone Braves Thursday afternoon off a walk-off single with the final score of, 8-7.
