Negaunee Miners Softball Gets the Dominant Win against Calumet 10-0.

Negaunee, MI May 11, 2021 – The Negaunee Miners Softball Team got the convincing 10-0 at home against the Calumet Copper Kings. Mark Evans and Gregg Nelson had the call on Fox Sports Marquette 105.1 and 99.9.

The game was played in Negaunee on Tuesday afternoon.

1st Inning

The Miners got off to a great start in this match up, as Calumet went three up and three down in the top of the first. This included two strikeouts by Josie Thompson. Although the Copper Kings forced two quick outs, Morgan Carlson gave the Miners the early lead with an RBI single. The Miners led 1-0 after the first.

 

2nd Inning

The second inning was a battle between the two pitchers. Negaunee again retired the side quickly by getting the first three Copper King batters out. Just like in the first, Thompson got two strikeouts this inning. Calumet’s defense also stood strong. The Copper Kings stopped the Miners from putting more runs on the board, and getting two strikeouts themselves in the process. The Miners still led 1-0.

3rd Inning

Negaunee’s defense continued to shut down Calumet. Although the Copper Kings got on base for the first time, the runner was thrown out while stealing. In the bottom of the third, Negaunee was able to extend their lead. The highlight of the inning was Lilly Nelson batting in two runs to give the Miners a 4-0 at the end of the third.

 

4th Inning

Another strong inning for both defenses, as neither team got anything on the board. In the top of the fourth, the Miners got another three quick outs to keep their momentum and end the inning. However, Calumet was able to stay in the game by shutting out the Miners in this inning. Negaunee still had a comfortable 4-0 lead after the fourth.

 

5th Inning

Negaunee started to get on a roll offensively in the fifth inning.

This was a dominant inning for Negaunee. After retiring the side with only five pitches, the Miners went on a tear in the bottom of the fifth. Josie Thompson hit one into the outfield for an RBI double to give Negaunee a 5-0 lead. Later on, Morgan Carlson continued to pour it on for the Miners with a 2RBI double. Finally, Lilly Nelson finished things off with an RBI single to give the Miners a commanding 8-0 lead after the fifth.

 

6th Inning

Negaunee’s dominance continued in the 6th inning. Once again, it was three up and three down for Calumet. This time, Thompson struck out every batter she faced, giving her an impressive ten strikeouts for the day. Negaunee went on to score two more runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 10-0 and finish the game with the mercy rule. The Miners scored ten runs on twelve hits, while Calumet was held to just one hit on the day.

 

Final: 10-0
