1st Inning

The Miners got off to a great start. In the top of the first, it was three up and three down for the Negaunee defense. Negaunee’s starting pitcher, Josie Thompson, struck out the last two Hematites to retire the side. The Miner’s momentum continued into the bottom of the inning, as they ended the first with a 3-0 lead.

2nd Inning

Thompson started the second right where she left off. After a quick flyout, she struck out the last two batters for the second inning in a row. After two innings, the Hematites had six batters in the box, four were struck out, and no runners on base. Negaunee stayed on a roll in the bottom of the inning. The Miners continued to get on base and capitalize. Lilly Nelson and Sierra Hendrickson both batted in runs to help extend the Negaunee lead. The Miners led 7-0 after the second.

3rd Inning

Thompson’s dominance continued into the third, as she faced three batters and got three strikeouts. At this point, nine Hematites came up to the plate, and seven were struck out by Thompson. In the bottom of the inning, Ishpeming’s errors kept expanding their deficit. The Miners got another four runs, which gave them a staggering 11-0 lead.

4th Inning

Ishpeming finally got some runners on the bases in the top of the fourth. However, they weren’t able to capitalize. Thompson recorded her 8th strikeout to continue the Miner’s shutout. In the bottom of the quarter, the Hematites finally had some success. It was three up and three down for Negaunee on offense, but they still held on to a comfortable 11-0 lead.

5th Inning

Ishpeming needed to get some runs to get back into the game to prevent a mercy-rule win for the Miners, but they wouldn’t get any. Two fly balls caused the Hematites to get a quick two outs, and later on, an Ishpeming runner was thrown out while stealing a base. The Miners got the convincing 11-0 victory. The Hematites only had two hits all game, and the Miners only got five in the cold and wind. In the end, Negaunee was able to take advantage of Ishpeming’s many errors.
