Miners Boys Basketball Falls to Highly-Ranked Escanaba 62-52 in District Championship on Sunny 101.9

Negaunee, MIMarch 27, 2021 – The Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball team fell to the Escanaba Eskymos in the 2021 District 33 Championship Game 62-52. Jesse Anderson had the call on Sunny 101.9.

Escanaba was ranked #3 in Michigan Division II going into this game.

1st Quarter

The first quarter saw great runs by both teams. After Negaunee took an early 7-6 lead, Escanaba got hot midway through the quarter. The Eskymos went on a 7-0 run to take a 13-7 lead. Escanaba got great contributions from Carter Hudson and Jared Hanson. Later in the quarter, Negaunee responded with their own run. They got six unanswered points, including four by Eli Luokkala, to tie the game up. A buzzer beater by Hanson gave the Eskymos a slim 15-13 lead to end the quarter.

 

2nd Quarter

The second quarter started of well for the Miners. A huge three-point shot by Gerald Johnson put Negaunee up by one early in the quarter, and things looked like they would only get better. However, a technical foul on Negaunee shifted the momentum. Escanaba hit three free throws as a result of the technical, and they finished the quarter on
a 11-2 run to lead 34-24 at halftime.

3rd Quarter

The third quarter went about the same as the end of the second. Escanaba continued to expand their lead. The Eskymos have been hot from downtown all afternoon, but especially in this quarter. The Eskymos hit three threes early on, including two from Erik Victorson. Meanwhile, Negaunee continued to struggle on offense, only scoring eight points as a team. Escanaba ended the third with a solid 48-34 advantage.

4th Quarter

The Miners made things interesting in the final quarter. Although they started the quarter down by 14, Negaunee got the deficit down to seven with about three minutes left. Nonetheless, Escanaba’s offense was just too talented, and Negaunee fell 62-52. It was a valiant effort by Gerald Johnson of Negaunee, who ended the day with an incredible 21 points. Negaunee’s seniors were able to get some playing time in their final game as Miners. The seniors are Eli Luokkala, Nick Jacobetti, and Will Luke. All of them made important contributions to the team’s success all season.
