The game was played in Gladstone on Tuesday night.

1st Quarter

The first quarter was indecisive, as neither team could get a comfortable lead. Lilly Nelson hit a three to put Negaunee up 7-4, but it was quickly answered by Clair Van Ginhoven of Gladstone. The Miners managed to get a one-point lead late in the quarter, which was added on by a bucket by Emilia Palomaki in the finals seconds of the quarter. The Miners led at the end of the first 12-9.

2nd Quarter

Both teams fought hard for every rebound.

The second quarter continued in the same grit-and-grind fashion of the first. Although the game was even, Negaunee was able to display their depth, which has given them so much success throughout the season. Meanwhile, the Braves continued to stay in the game and never gave Negaunee a comfortable advantage. The Miners led at halftime 22-19.

The game was a nail-biter, with no team getting a double-digit lead.

3rd Quarter

The third quarter was just as competitive as the others, but with more offense. The Miners went up by six at one point, and it seemed like they would get on a run. Although, that lead was quickly reduced by a three from Gladstone’s Aliana Martinez, and an and one basket by Alaina Trudeau. After another Negaunee basket, the Braves hit another three to tie the game up yet again. Negaunee would get a free throw before the end of the quarter to go up 34-33.

4th Quarter

Negaunee’s defense was dominant in the final quarter. The Braves were able to stay in it early because of Claire Van Ginhoven going 6/6 from the free throw line this quarter. However, the Brave’s couldn’t get a single field goal in the final eight minutes. At the same time, Negaunee had a few plays that gave them momentum boosts. Lilly Nelson hit a deep three to give the Miners a four point lead, and a key and one by Alyssa Hill gave them some more breathing room. Hill came up clutch for the Miners by scoring seven of Negaunee’s last nine points in the final minutes of the game. The Miners eventually closed out the game 48-42 to give them eleven wins on the season.

Final: 48-42

NEXT GAME: The Miners will host the Westwood Patriots on Friday, March 19th. This game will be a part of a doubleheader, and the boys team will play right after the girls. Tune in at 6pm for the Elder Agency Pregame Show with Jesse Anderson.
