Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball Defeats Houghton 43-21 on Sunny 101.9

Houghton, MIFebruary 27, 2021 – The Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball team went to Houghton and defeated the Gremlins 43-21. Jesse Anderson had the call on Sunny 101.9.

1st Quarter

It was a strong first quarter by the Miners. Negaunee opened the game with the first two baskets. The first was scored by Eli Luokkala, and the second by Gerald Johnson. After each team scored another basket to make the score 6-5, Negaunee went on to end the quarter with seven unanswered points to take a 13-5 lead. Five of which were scored by Luokkala, who led Negaunee in the first quarter with nine total points.

2nd Quarter

The second quarter was all about the Miners’ defense. Houghton didn’t hit a field goal during the entire second quarter, as they scored one point off of a free throw. Meanwhile, Negaunee continued to find the bottom of the basket. Luokkala finished the first half with 14 points to lead the Miners, and Will Luke scored a few buckets as well, scoring the last four points to give the Miners a 24-6 lead at halftime.

3rd Quarter

The offensive struggles of the Gremlins continued into the third quarter. Houghton was only able to score two points during this stretch. Negaunee also wasn’t able to put up many points, with all seven points being scored by Luke. This brought the score to 31-8 at the end of the quarter.

4th Quarter

Houghton’s offense finally had some success, as they went on a 7-1 run to start the final quarter. However, Negaunee was able to bounce back, and finish the game strong. After Luokkala converted on an and-one, and Houghton’s Brandon Kieranen hit a 3 in response, Negaunee finished the game on their own little run to end the game. The final score was 43-21, with Luokkala scoring 20 points, and Luke getting 16 of his own to propel the Miners to the comfortable win.
