Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball Takes Down Marquette 43-33 on Sunny 101.9

Negaunee, MIFebruary 23, 2021 – The Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team defeated the Marquette Redettes on Tuesday night, 43-33. Jesse Anderson had the call live from Negaunee’s Lakeview Memorial Gymnasium on Sunny 101.9

1st Half:

The Miners got off to a hot start with a Lilly Nelson 3-pointer to begin the game. Brooklyn Michelin scored shortly after to make it a one-point game, but then the Miners went on a run. Alyssa Hill scored and Nelson hit another 3 to give Negaunee an 8-2 advantage. Marquette stayed in the game with the play of Maria Millado, as she scored six consecutive points for the Redettes. Larissa Anderson and Emilia Palomaki scored for the Miners in the final minutes of the first quarter, and Negaunee led 16-10.

Hill and Nelson took over the game for the Miners in the second quarter, and made sure Marquette couldn’t get back in it. Negaunee scored 14 points in the second, with Hill scoring eight and Nelson scoring six. On the other end, Marquette only scored two points total in the quarter with a pair of free throws.

2nd Half:

The Redettes tried to spark a comeback in the third quarter, and a 5-0 run cut the Miners’ lead down to 13. Morgan Carlson ended Marquette’s momentum on the next possession with a 3-point shot. Marquette kept battling, but Hill proved to be too much inside with an and-one. Millado cut the lead back down to 12 with two straight baskets, but a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Hill boosted the lead back up to 15.

Negaunee and Marquette traded baskets and free throws in the fourth quarter, and the Redettes couldn’t get any closer than 10. Hill and Nelson combined for 32 points, and the Miners won 43-33. Negaunee has now won five straight games since their season opening loss to Calumet.
