West Ishpeming, MI – February 19, 2021 – The Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team went up the hill on Friday night for a road rivalry game with the Westwood Patriots! It was close in the first half, but a big third quarter from the Miners pushed them a 48-27 win. Mark Evans had the call live from Westwood High School on Sunny 101.9.
1st Half:

The action started fast and furious for both teams, with Negaunee’s Lilly Nelson and Westwood’s Megan Marta nailing 3-pointers. The Miners converted on their first four offensive trips, and took advantage with a 9-3 lead with four points from Morgan Carlson. Natalie Prophet drilled a 3 to cut into Negaunee’s lead and a putback from Mallory Leece shortly afterwards tied the game at 9-9. Carlson converted again for the Miners with a 3-point shot, giving Negaunee back the lead as the quarter came to a close.

Nelson got Negaunee off to a good start in the second quarter with a bucket from 3-point range. Westwood stayed close, but another Miner 3-pointer by Larissa Anderson kept Negaunee in front, 18-14. Carlson and Alyssa Hill scored down low for Negaunee, and the Miners led 23-15 in the final minutes of the first half. Summer Dudo added a free throw for Negaunee to counter a Patriots’ basket, and the Miners led 24-17 at halftime.

2nd Half:

After a close game in the first half, it was slowing turning into a wipeout. Negaunee was on fire to start the second half, and Westwood was having major trouble with turnovers. Palomaki had a nice start to the third, scoring seven points in the first few minutes. Baskets from Nelson and Carlson complemented Palomaki well, and Negaunee all of a sudden had a 35-17 lead. Westwood couldn’t score was having issues with taking care of the ball, and Negaunee’s defense was tough to crack. Westwood finally scored with only 2:24 left in the third after an Ellie Miller free throw. The Patriots put another free throw on the board, but a Palomaki and-one extended the big Miners’ lead. Negaunee outscored Westwood 14-2 in the third, and led 38-19.

The fourth quarter was even for the most part, but the Miners held a large lead. Negaunee got baskets from Josie Thompson and Shelby Prusi down the stretch, and continued to hold Westwood down on defense. Marta added a basket at the buzzer for Westwood, but the Patriots only scored eight total in the second half. Negaunee cruised to a big 48-27 win over Westwood, improving to 4-1 on the season.
