Ishpeming, Michigan– After a scoreless two minutes to start the game, the Miners break the drought and take a 2-0 lead. The Hematites respond with a 3-pointer to jump ahead 3-2. With 4:04 to play in the first quarter, the Miners trail 5-2 as they call a timeout to regroup. Both teams are struggling to score in the early going as turnovers are plaguing the offenses’. Ashley Veale hits a lay-up as she cuts the Ishpeming lead to 6-4.
First quarter:
Negaunee: 4 Ishpeming: 8
Ishpeming scores first in the second quarter to take a 10-4 lead as their press continues to give the Miners problems. Negaunee gets a big 3-pointer to break the scoring drought and cut the Ishpeming lead to 10-7. The Hematites call a timeout with 5:52 left in the first half. With under five minutes to play, Ishpeming leads 13-7. The Miners look to get their offensive rolling in the final minutes of the half as they have fallen behind 17-7.
Halftime score:
Negaunee: 8 Ishpeming: 19
Negaunee scores first in the second half, as they cut the Ishpeming lead to 19-10. The Hematites respond, pushing their lead back to 11. With six minutes to play in the third quarter, Neguanee trails 21-12. The Miners score and get fouled as they look to make a 3-point play and cut into the Ishpeming lead. The Miners trail 21-14 with four minutes left in the third quarter. Ashley Veale gets the bucket and the foul as she cuts Ishpeming’s lead to 23-16. With 1:43 left in the third quarter, Negaunee has the ball and looks to cut into the Hematite lead.

Third quarter:
Negaunee: 16 Ishpeming: 25
Ishpeming strikes first in the fourth quarter, taking a 27-16 lead with just over six minutes to play in the game. Rosalie Anderson pulls in an offensive rebound and scores for Negaunee, as they trail 27-18. The Miners score and put on the full-court press with four minutes left. With 3:35 left to play, Negaunee trails 29-22 as they turn up the pressure on defense. The Miners hit a pair of free throws and cut the lead to five points; 29-24. The intensity is picking as the game is coming down to the wire. Negaunee trails by four points with 2:10 left. Negaunee trails 30-26 as Ishpeming takes a timeout. With 1:04 left Ishpeming is trying to take time off the clock, as the Miners are forced to foul in hopes to get the ball back. The Hematites hit one-of-two from the line and retain the possession with an offensive rebound as they head back to the line. Kayla Hakala drops a 3-pointer off the screen to pull the Miners within two points; 31-29. The Miners have the ball down by three with 15 seconds left.
The Miners are unable to overcome a slow start as they take the game down to the wire but fall in the final minutes to Ishpeming.
