Marquette, MIMarch 26, 2026The Upper Peninsula Power Company is reminding area residents to be careful while plowing and clearing snow near utility poles and transformer boxes.

Dan Freeborn, UPPCO Manager of Communications & External Affairs, shared some tips with Mark & Walt in the Morning.

Freeborn explained that as people continue to dig out and move the large amounts of snow that has accumulated this season, it is important to be on the lookout for low profile above ground electrical equipment such as transformers that can be damaged by plows.

He said striking such a unit may not only damage the plow vehicle, but it can impact electrical service in the area.  He also talked about making the effort to not pile up snow around the bases of electrical utility poles and keep them clear in case they need to be accessed by repair and service technicians.

Freeborn also discussed ice safety on hydroelectric reservoirs where UPPCO has drawn down water levels in anticipation of the spring runoff. He added that UPPCO’s hydroelectric reservoirs are expected to begin returning to their normal water levels during the month of April, depending on the rate of snow melt and the onset of spring.
