Lansing, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – U.P. state lawmakers introduced several bills yesterday in Lansing continuing efforts to curb meth production.

State Representative John Kivela of Marquette and Senator Tom Casperson of Escanaba introduced legislation in both chambers creating a misdemeanor crime concerning meth production that gives prosecutors the option of charging a person with a misdemeanor or a felony.

Kivela says the legislation is an adjustment to current law that would address first-time offenders.

State Representative Ed McBroom of Vulcan introduced additional legislation calling for increased penalties for meth related offenses within 1000 feet of school property.

McBroom says the change will place meth related penalties on par with other drug offenses in school zones.
