Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – U.S. Congressman Dan Benishek is opposing a proposal by the Canadian government to bury nuclear waste near Lake Huron.
A Canadian Joint Review Panel this week recommended a proposal that would place a permanent underground nuclear waste storage facility less than a half a mile from Lake Huron.
If given final approval, more than 7 million cubic feet of nuclear waste would be buried at the site.
Benishek says the plan is unacceptable.
The Iron River Republican co-sponsored a House Resolution that opposes the plan and calls on the President and Secretary of State to ensure that the Canadian Government does not permanently store nuclear waste in the Great Lakes Basin.
