Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The Marquette Area Public Schools have received a Michigan State Police grant for increasing safety in the district. MAPS will receive $55,118 for an alert system project.

The money comes from the Competitive School Safety Grant Program, which is intended to enhance public safety, by reducing and preventing crime on school property.

The funding will be used to purchase 350 panic button pendants to be worn by teachers and staff to provide additional school security measures.

Schools officials say the pendants will enhance the response time of emergency personnel to increase the safety of students, faculty, and staff.

Marquette County Emergency Management and law enforcement agencies collaborated with district officials on the application for the grant.
