Sault Ste. Marie, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The Chippewa County Board of Commissioners in Sault Ste. Marie is getting into the “Dark Stores” controversy by suing Walmart.

The board passed an initial vote this week to file the lawsuit against Walmart over taxes.

The board is taking the action in response to the regulatory loophole that allows big box stores like Walmart to pay less in property taxes.

Commissioners say that has cost the county hundreds of thousands of dollars that they could have used for various services.

County officials are determining how much money they can put toward the lawsuit, and hope to have final approval by next week.
