Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Today is primary election day in Michigan.
Candidates running in several federal, state and local political races will be pared down and local tax proposals will be decided.
Three Republicans and two Democrats are vying for the seat in the 1st Congressional District which includes the entire U.P. and a portion of northern Lower Michigan.
Among the candidates on the Republican ticket are current or former state lawmakers Tom Casperson and Jason Allen along with retired Lt. General Jack Bergman.
The Democrats running are former state Democratic Party chair Lon Johnson and former downstate Kalkaska County Sheriff Jerry Cannon.
Current U.S. Representative Dan Benishek is not seeking re-election.
