Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a two-vehicle accident last night on County Road 550 involving a semi-truck and an SUV.

The accident happened around 9:45 p.m. near County Road KCE in Powell Township when a northbound Lincoln MKH, driven by 36-year-old Donald Fortin of Big Bay, rear-ended a northbound International semi tractor-trailer.

The semi, driven by 58-year-old Steven Zarkowski of Marquette, was travelling at a slow speed due to severe weather conditions.

Fortin, his wife and two young daughters were injured in the crash and taken to UP Health Systems-Marquette for treatment.

One of the daughters, aged 13, was not wearing a seatbelt and sustained serious injuries.

She was airlifted to the U-of-M Health Systems Pediatric Neurosurgery Department in Ann Arbor and was last listed in critical condition.

The others were treated and released.

    Zarkowski was not injured.

Deputies say alcohol was not a factor but it is believed that Fortin may have been driving too fast for conditions.
