Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – A group has formed seeking to put the question of a proposed boathouse at Founders Landing in Marquette on the ballot for voters to decide.

The group “Save Founders Landing Beach” wants a referendum to allow city voters to decide if the Upper Peninsula Community Rowing Club should be granted a 25-year lease to construct a boathouse near the Hampton Inn.

The group’s effort is in response to the Marquette City Commission’s recent vote to grant the lease for the facility.

Under the agreement, the Rowing Club will have to pay for the construction and maintenance of the proposed building, but it will be owned by the city.

City officials say the facility will be available to the public and access to the beach will not be affected.

The group is holding the first in a series of referendum petition signing sessions at 4:00 p.m. Thursday at the Citizens’ Forum at Lakeview Arena in Marquette.
