Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Governor Rick Snyder has signed bills sponsored by U.P. legislators into law.
The first measure, authored by State Representative John Kivela of Marquette, outlaws so-called “smurfing,” the buying of meth ingredients in small amounts from multiple retailers.
The bill is part of a larger package of bills signed earlier this year by the governor to curb access to chemicals used to make meth.
The ingredients are largely available on store shelves, and the bills are designed to make it difficult to obtain them in large amounts.
Snyder also signed a bill sponsored by state Senator Tom Casperson of Escanaba, which eliminates redundant requirements for local road agencies related to employee retirement compensation.
Local road agencies will still uphold other certification requirements including a searchable database of agency budget, finances and employment information.
