Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Michigan voters have passed Proposal 1, the only statewide ballot question in yesterday’s elections.

The measure calls for the phase-out of Michigan’s personal property tax on business.

The PPT was a source of revenue for many local communities, but Michigan’s general fund would partially replace those funds, with a projected increase in revenue from the state use tax and expiring tax credits.

In the 1st U.S. Congressional District, incumbent Republican Dan Benishek survived a GOP primary challenge from Tea Party candidate Alan Arcand.

Benishek now faces Democrat Jerry Cannon in November.

In the 107th State House District, which includes Chippewa County, Tea Party candidate Lee Chatfield defeated incumbent Frank Foster in the Republican primary.

Chatfield faces Democrat Jim Page in the fall.
