Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – A state trooper is dead of gunshot wounds suffered during a traffic stop last night in downstate Mason County. The Michigan State Police say Trooper Paul Butterfield died late last night during emergency surgery.
Authorities say yesterday evening, around 6:20, in Mason County’s Sherman Township, an unidentified man and woman exchanged gunfire with Butterfield during a traffic stop, and Butterfield was shot in the head.
The pair fled and a passerby came upon the trooper on the side of the road a few minutes after the shooting and called police. The suspects were captured shortly after in Manistee County.
Authorities there say the pair were involved in a shootout there, too. One of the suspects was shot and taken to the hospital for treatment.
