MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – A coalition of U.S. Senators from six Great Lakes states are encouraging President Obama to include risks and impacts to the Great Lakes into his plan addressing climate change.
Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Al Franken of Minnesota, Sherrod Brown of Ohio and Charles Schumer of New York are praising the President for his plan on climate change, but they are disappointed the Great Lakes were not mentioned in it.
The senators all sent a letter to the President pointing to the importance of the Great Lakes. They say the lakes supply drinking water to 40 million residents and provide 1.5 million jobs, and problems such as low lake levels and extreme weather are likely to worsen if climate change continues.
The Senators are calling on the President to fully incorporate the risks and impacts to the Great Lakes when implementing the climate
