The study, by Dr. Thomas Power, concludes that a return to metal ore mining and processing would damage the economic well-being and vitality of the Western U.P. The group, “Friends of the Land of Keweenaw” or FOLK, contracted with Power Consulting in September, 2012 to prepare the study.
According to Linda Rulison, FOLK President, the report shows there are costs associated with mining activities that tend to offset the positive impacts of the high pay associated with mining jobs, and if mining is allowed to resume, it will displace other important economic activities in the region.
The study is one of a series of action research projects that FOLK is sponsoring under its grassroots Mining Education and Citizen Empowerment Campaign.
