MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – A new survey shows Northern Michigan University has the largest minority graduation rate gap of the state’s 15 public universities.
According to the report released Wednesday by the Education Trust, Michigan’s universities all continue to have lower graduation rates for minority students than white students.
The report, which examined six-year graduation rates based on data submitted to the U.S. Department of Education for 2011, found that none of Michigan’s universities are graduating black students at nearly the same or higher rates as whites. In most cases, Hispanic students also graduated at lower rates than whites.
Northern Michigan University showed the largest graduation rate gap, with an 8 percent rate for blacks, 33.3 percent for Hispanics, and 49.3 percent for white students.
University of Michigan-Dearborn had the smallest gap with 45.5 percent of blacks graduating within six years, while 59.1 percent of Hispanics did the same, and 50.9 percent of white students graduated within that time-frame.
